Ill Manors: institution research***

Distribution research
  1. Research film distribution using this guide from the UK Film Distributors' Association. It's called Launching Film and takes you through the whole process of distributing a movie.
  2. Read the whole step-by-step guide (warning: this is LONG and will take you around an hour)
  3. Summarise the 10 steps of film distribution in a list using your own words.
But first, the distributor must be brought on board.

It is the task of distributors to identify and deliver the largest possible audience for every film.

a distributor and consider how you might launch a film. What sort of business considerations would you take into account, and what are the key decisions you must weigh up?

  • identifying its audience
  • considering why they'd go and see it
  • estimating the revenue potential across all the formats of its release
  • persuading exhibitors (cinema operators) to play the film
  • developing plans and partnerships to build awareness of and interest in the film
  • aiming to convert as much interest as possible into cinema visits

The UK has six major distributors (directly affiliated to the Hollywood studios) and many independent (unaffiliated) distributors who tend to handle films made outside the major studios.
Distributors will consider who is the target audience
A distributor's opinion on a film's marketability may, and really should, be sought even before it goes into production.

Ill Manors: Funding and production budget
  1. What was the estimated budget for Ill Manors? £100,000
  2. Where did the money come from? List the different organisations and companies that contributed funding to Ill Manors. Ill manors was funded by the studios Film London microwave, BBC film and aimimage. FILM LONDON was part of the production in 2009. the BBC films and aimimage are known for their low budget productions,
  3. How did the Ill Manors budget compare to a Hollywood blockbuster such as Skyfall? Skyfall had a budget of $150 - $200 million  which raised in the Box office to $951,323,067, whereas ‘Ill Manors’ budget was much less £100,00 which raised to £453,570 in the Box office. where as Ill manors was much less. Skyfall stars famous famous artists such as Adele, Alicia Keys etc.                    similarities between the two are that theyboth contain violence and get deep into social realism, moreover both have various connotations of danger and lives that have been neglected at a young age because of the area surround them.
Moreover there are differences between these films firstly by the budget of the films are very different, ‘Ill Manors’ was produced with a low budget funding as it was an project by Ben Drew who is a music artist therefore companies didn't want to fund him, as they thought the film would not be successful however ‘Skyfall’ has a big budget due to the props, settings, characters and many more (mise en scene) as companies know that a James Bond film will be successful they funded a lot of money to the film to be very attractive to the audience therefore they would watch it. Furthermore the characters featured in ‘Skyfall’ are much more popular known actors well known to the industry, the audience are aware of these characters as they have see them before in other blockbusters, however ‘Ill Manors’ have new characters who are new to the film industry giving them an opportunity to show their skills of acting therefore the audience don’t know these characters very well and would not be aware of the film as much as ‘Skyfall’.
